The Citadel
The second Anglo - Dutch War in 1665 -7 resulted in the commissioning of a major new
fortification for Plymouth , the Royal Citadel .
Built on the Hoe on the orders of Charles II after the Restoration of the Monarchy (1660) .
The citadel was built on the site of Drake's Fort (1592 - 1598)
