The Merry Maidens is one of the few 'true' stone circles in Cornwall with 19 dressed granite blocks of between
0.8 and 1.4 metres high forming a perfect 24m circle .
The Cornish name for the stone circle is ‘Dauns Meyn’ (‘dance of stones’).
Religious persuasion was used to convince people to act in an acceptable way.
In this case Girls were turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath.
