Vermin Trap - Ditsworthy Warren
Vermin Trap - Ditsworthy Warren

A good example of a Vermin Trap is situated on the South East side of Gutter Tor.
An 'X' shaped structure with a central trap.
Vermin traps of various kinds are found within most Warrens.
These traps were used to catch the predators of the Warrens Rabbits , mainly stoats , weasels and polecats.
Vermin would have been funneled by the converging stone sidewalls towards a small central baited granite tunnel
and trapped there by slate shutters triggered to drop when the animal entered.
Used in the late C18 , until vermin was shot or caught using spring traps.
------------------------
Location : Park as for - Yellowmead Stone Circle.
Just to the west of a green track climbing up Gutter Tor.
