A 90-foot-high granite monument (1836) erected in memory of Francis Basset,
1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset (1757 / 1835) , philanthropist , known for looking after his workers,
and did much to improve their lives .
A member of the most important mining family in the area.
The Basset family were major landowners and controlled two of the richest mines in Cornwall -
"Cook's Kitchen", in Pool and "Dolcoath", near Tehidy.
