East of Pengersick is this section of the Serpentine cliffs with veins of Talc / Soapstone.
Soapstone was removed from the cliffs and the Quarry at Soapy Cove / Gew Graze to be used in the manufacture
of Porcelain strong enough to withstand boiling water -
tea was becoming increasing popular at this time.

By 1784, the government realised that heavy taxation on Tea was creating more problems than it was worth (Smuggling).
William Pitt the Younger, slashed the tax from 119% to 12.5% and made legal tea affordable.
