The Quarry operated in C18 to supply stone to build fortifications during the Napoleonic Wars.
After 1815 , the Quarry quickly became uneconomic .
In 1887 Sir George Burt opened the caves as a tourist attraction .
In 1976 the caves closed with the old entrance gated.
The second set of Mile Indicator Posts are visible on the cliff top.
