The old working Quarry level where Portland Freestone was worked is above the sloping lower Prickle Bed ledge .
The bed is very irregular and lumpy through nodular cementation and bioturbation by Decapod Crustaceans (crabs)
Thalassinoides Burrows and eroded giant Ammonites are also present.
Once the blocks of stone were lowered from the working ledge they had to be transported to boats tied up
against the seaward side of the lower ledge
