Hallsands
Hallsands

A view , from the viewing platform , of the last remaining Cottages of the
'Lost Village' of old Hallsands - access looks difficult !!
-----------------------------
In 1897 dredging of sand and gravel began from the seabed further up the coast .
Over the next four years some 660,000 tonnes was removed to extend the naval dockyard at Plymouth.
This caused the beach level at Hallsand to drop 12 ft, leaving the village dangerously exposed to the sea.
On the night of 26 January 1917 , a rare strong easterly storm struck destroying all but 2 of the 37 houses.
------------------------------
Today a new village built on the cliff top overlooks the scene of the disaster.
