Haytor Granite Railway - Junction

The Haytor Granite Tramway was opened in 1820 , by George Templer , linking the Quarries at Haytor
to the basin of the Stover Canal (Ventiford to the Teign Navigation).
The 7 mile main line had 2 to 3 miles of track serving the 5 quarries around Haytor
(Haytor Quarry, Holwell Quarry, Rubble Heap Quarry, Harrow Barrow and Western Quarry).
The empty iron -wheeled wagons were pulled to the quarries by teams of horses ,
the loaded trams were run downhill by gravity to Ventiford.
A train of a 12 wagons was handled by a team of 18 horses.
The tramway remained in use until about 1858.
