Kitty Jay is said to have been a young unmarried housemaid who was betrayed by her lover , forced to leave the farm ,
took the only option to here and was found hanging in one of the barns at Canna.
The custom of the day was that any suicide could not be buried in consecrated ground .
If the body was buried at the parish limits, preferably at crossroads, the spirit would be unable to find its way back to its former haunts .
This grave is on the intersection of a Road north west of Hound Tor and a bridleway to Natsworthy gate .
The grave has become a modern day ‘shrine’.
