A new ship was built in Brixham using the base of an old Thames barge.
Drake's vessel had originally been named the Pelican when he set off from Plymouth
with four other vessels in November 1577 .
It was renamed the Golden Hind by Drake (June 1578 ), and on return
Elizabeth I knighted him on board the ship ( 4 April 1581 ).
Drake became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe (1577-1580)
in an epic expedition of plunder and discovery.
A second replica (Golden Hinde) from 1973 is at St. Mary Overie Dock in London.
