Smeaton’s Tower (1759 to 1882) was the third of four famous lighthouses built to mark the dangerous
Eddystone Reef, 14 miles south west of Plymouth.
The upper part of the lighthouse was taken down, brought ashore and rebuilt on a new granite base.
Opened on Plymouth Hoe (September 1884) , it is one of the city’s most famous landmarks .
On a clear day the remains of the original lighthouse the ‘stump’ and the current lighthouse
can be seen on the horizon.
