Plymouth Breakwater (1812) is a 1,710 yd stone breakwater protecting Plymouth Sound .
The oval Breakwater masonry Fort was built 1860/80 , 35 yards inside the Breakwater.
It was part of a ring of fortifications around Plymouth Sound with Fort Bovisand (1861/9)
to the East and Picklecombe Fort (1860's) to the West.
Armed in 1879 with 16 guns in armoured casemates. Disarmed before WW1.
There is a beacon on the Breakwater with a Lighthouse on the other end from 1844 .
