Wine Cove , with a sea stack in view , and the next inlet - Pepper Cove - gained their names from Smuggling .
High levels of tax on luxury goods as well as basic commodities such as soap , leather ,
salt- vital to the Cornish pilchard industry - encouraged smuggling.
The main period of Cornwall's smuggling was between approx. 1700 and 1850.
By 1770 an estimated 470,000 gallons of brandy and 160 tonnes of tea
were being smuggled through Cornwall each year.
