Measured Mile Markers
Measured Mile Markers

Near Talland is this view from the Coast Path of one of the two Western Mile Markers.
Two more are one nautical mile to the East near Looe.
These are “measured mile markers” set one nautical mile (6080 ft) apart, and used to calculate a ships speed .
Ships at full speed note the time when the first set of markers are in transit (in line with each other)
and then again as the next markers are in transit.
The ship then turns round and repeats the timings .
The average of the two runs makes allowance for any effect of wind and tide.
