Looking up the slipway of the Penlee Lifeboat Station (1913-1983) , built into the cliffs below the Newlyn to Mousehole road.

The Station closed in 1983 , but has been maintained as a memorial to the 8 volunteer lifeboat-men
who died in the Penlee lifeboat disaster - 19 December 1981 .
The Penlee Lifeboat - 'Solomon Browne' - a wooden 47-foot Watson-class boat built in 1960 ,
went to the aid of the coaster 'Union Star' after its engines failed in heavy seas.
After the lifeboat had rescued four people, both vessels were lost with all hands , 16 people died .
