About 300 million years ago , during the Variscan Orogeny , plate tectonics caused the collision of two super
continents . The Sedimentary rocks deposited in a shallow sea during the Carboniferous period - layers of shales and
mudstones were compressed like a concertina, producing a range of spectacular folds and faults .
The top surface was then eroded flat
