The famous Zig Zag folds in the cliffs at Millook Haven.
Vertical cascade of recumbent Chevron Folds - Folds that are nearly horizontal
with the angles of the folds shaped like chevrons.
The rocks are part of the Upper Carboniferous age Crackington Formation, thinly interbedded sandstones and shales,
subsequently deformed into zig-zag folds with near horizontal fold axes as a result of the Variscan orogeny
(mountain-building) at the end of the Carboniferous Period.
Strata under high overburden pressure in conjunction with layer-parallel plate tectonic compression
can be deformed in this way .
