Charlestown grew out of a small fishing village. The Harbour was Built
in the 1790's by Charles Rashleigh , to transport copper / china clay from nearby mines.
Following the decline of Copper its main function became the export of China Clay.
By the 1990's the size of vessels used for the transport of china clay had outgrown the harbour,
and the last commercial load of Clay was in 2000.
