A fine Natural Arch / Sea Stack formed from Permian Age , red-browny purple , Breccio - Conglomerates
(cobbles in a pebble and gravel matrix).
A fault runs through the Rock Arch , causing the hole to form , the fault reappears in the coastal cliffs.

The coastal area is primarily Lower Devonian (meadfoot group) Slates, with some Permian Age Breccio - Conglomerate Cliffs .

Thurlestone Rock and the local settlement take their names from 'thirled stone'. The Anglo-Saxon word 'thirl' means hole.
